This past week I discovered that some industrious person in my community has started a trash can cleaning service. I first noticed something was a little different when I arrived home from work and saw a flyer in my door. The flyer introduced the name of the company and the rates for cleaning out my poly cart trash can. They had a one time price and then a better deal if you want to have your can cleaned on a regular basis. They just had a phone number to call and no website.
The reason I bring up this story is because I think this is a brilliant idea. First, the Housing Association where I live forbids you from keeping your trash cart outside, it has to be in your garage! I know, it's insane but that is a whole story in itself. Needless to say, the extreme summer heat causes the bacteria to grow in the cart and the odors become significant. The slime that builds up in the bottom of that plastic beast are almost alive! My town is full of these Housing Associations and many of them have this stupid rule. There are a lot of prospective customers in the area! Second, The start up costs for this kind of service would be extremely low. You could buy a large high capacity sprayer and some detergent and disinfectant and maybe a long handled brush. You would probably want to invest in some rubber gloves and some protective eye wear. I would guess that you could get this business rolling for under $50.00. Third, while this new company had no website you could use a free blogger blog and a $10.00 domain and get a simple one page site up to cover the details of your business. The domain name could be included in the flyer and I think it would really help sales. I also think that free sites like Craigslist and Backpage could be a real good advertising platform.
You would need to see what your city ordinances mean for any regulations that pertain to trash cart cleaning too. At the end of the day this business is just the kind of venture I like to focus on here at this site. I would love to know what you think of this idea and encourage you to leave a comment.
